SCOLIOSIS FOCUS
What is scoliosis?
Scoliosis should be understood as a complex, three-dimensional deviation of the spine.
The spine is deformed, showing a series of curves in the frontal plane, the rotation observed in the transversal plane and the torsion of the trunk segments in the sagittal plane.
Being diagnosed with scoliosis late, I felt condemned for life with no the slightest hope for improvement. However, I might be the best example that it's not usually the case.
Yoga classes with a focus on scoliosis aim at obtaining better posture and less pain.
Therefore we aim at stretching tightened muscles and strengthening the weak ones to create more symmetrical alignment. Combining yoga postures with breathing awareness, we influence the spine column positively.
Consequently, yoga classes focusing on scoliosis require an individual, tailor-made approach to enable the student to build up confidence (by increasing body consciousness) and respect for one's own body (by knowing one's limits).
The sequence apart of therapeutical purposes must be fun.
Yoga was a life changer. It helped me change my mindset, and it made me free to see myself instead of seeing myself through the perspective of my deviated spine.
I wouldn't be here feeling so self-confident and radiant without all the teachers that always motivated me. I feel immensely grateful for the inspiration of Elise Browning Miller, the author of "Yoga for Scoliosis" and Marcia Monroe, the author of "Yoga and Scoliosis: A Journey to Health and Healing". Undergoing the systematic regime of exercises, I highly value Katharina Schroth's "The Three-Dimensional Scoliosis Treatment." My latest course, "El Curso definitivo para la Escoliosis" by Fisiom, definitely embraced and ordered ideas from the interdisciplinary perspective.
